Difficult books demand patience because they ask the reader to slow down and think carefully about each idea. In a world filled with quick information and constant distraction, the act of reading slowly becomes a form of intellectual discipline. The reader who struggles through complex ideas gradually develops a stronger mind. Understanding does not appear instantly, but grows through repeated effort and reflection. Just as physical exercise strengthens the body, intellectual effort strengthens the mind. The reader who learns to endure the temporary confusion of difficult books eventually discovers insights that remain hidden from those who only seek easy reading.

@itsbookgains Reading long-form books requires working memory, long-term memory, narrative maintenance and empathetic simulation. It’s a great workout for the brain.
Doomscrolling requires none of that cognitive machinery.

@itsbookgains Difficult books force a different kind of reading.
The struggle to understand them often teaches more than the comfort of easy pages ever will.

@itsbookgains Totally agree with you on this one. Instant gratification is turning people into zombies. Glued on their phones all day long without actually gaining anything sensible. But rather rewire the brain in the wrong way.

@itsbookgains I did a thing where I measured the difficulty of the books I’m reading, and counted the words I read per day, to calculate a daily cognitive load, in hopes of being able to process more with regular practice.
Three months in and I’m noticing improvement of daily cognitive load.

@itsbookgains I believe we are being herded. Food, attention span, art appreciation, morality, education, and more. Otherwise, this is all some nightmare coincidence? Don’t think so. The question is, what are we willing to do to remedy it?

@itsbookgains The comparison to exercise assumes difficulty itself builds understanding. But a poorly written book wastes time—real intellectual growth comes from grappling with clear complexity, not manufactured obscurity. Struggling with bad prose isn’t discipline, it’s just struggle.

@itsbookgains This is exactly what I also think and believe in! Books should not always be easy reads, page-turners with a new cliffhanger every few pages. This is too shallow.
I wrote this short story for X, and tried to make it a bit demanding too for the reader…

some books really force you to slow down and think, and it can feel frustrating at times. But I guess it’s part of the process
the more you sit with difficult ideas, the more your mind starts to adjust and understand them.l

AI can’t replace real human reading—not the utilitarian kind, nor the desperate rush for quick knowledge.
It can accelerate the process, but you only harvest what you bet.
Haste makes waste. The clumsiest, slowest path is often the quickest.
Deep comprehension is forged only in the grind against resistant, difficult text.

@itsbookgains One of the main reasons I’ve decided to pick up more classical novels. Such unique, succinct, hidden but impactful lessons to be learned. And, they’re big, dense or weighty.
I always think any choice of reading is opposing to the standard of today’s society.

@itsbookgains Many famous philosophical novels are more lecture than story.
You’re not reading a narrative — you’re reading the author’s ego wrapped in metaphors.
